Ironically this is the time when we need it most! When we calm our nervous system and relax our mind, we allow for more clarity and balance to come, which allows us to make better decisions and function more efficiently in our day-to-day life.
When we are juggling a lot of commitments and responsibilities, we end up running our body at a fast speed as we are trying to keep up with getting everything done to meet all our needs and often the needs of our family. When we function at over-capacity, our nervous system often falls into a form of fight or flight because we are in a survival mode!
The fight or flight response is an automatic physiological reaction to an event that is perceived as stressful or frightening. The perception of threat activates the sympathetic nervous system and triggers an acute stress response that prepares the body to take action. This is why even when we should technically collapse from over-exhaustion, we actually have more energy to keep going.
If our body remains in this state for a long time, our nervous system will get over run and this leads to burn out. In these cases, it’s even more difficult to slow down and give ourselves some rest and recovery because we are running at a certain speed. Our mind is very intelligent to convince us that taking care of ourself can wait because there are “more important” things to attend to.
Normally the more busy we are, the more we can benefit from slowing down and resting the mind and body! This can be done in many ways, such as meditation, breathwork, listening to relaxing music among others. My favourite is to get a massage as I notice how much physical tension I hold in my body when I am in doing mode and the physical release of this tension softens my mind body and soul in a holistic way.
Back when I was in India a few years ago studying Ayurvedic Medicine, which is a healthy-lifestyle system that people in India have used for more than 5,000 years, I learned that the philosophy recommends getting an Abhyanga massage once a month to support health and vitality, this type of massage is basically a massage that focuses on the healing qualities of the oils.
What was even more interesting is that even though this is extremely relaxing to receive the touch and easing of the muscles, the biggest benefit of this type of massage is the absorption of the oils through the skin. The oils they use are highly concentrated from medicinal plants and herbs that are really healing for the body. This massage can drive any tension in aggravated body tissues in the back into the gastrointestinal tract to be eliminated which allows for detoxification.
After learning all this, I vowed to myself that I would get an Abhyanga Massage every month. Sometimes I even took my own special Ayurvedic oils with me to the massage parlour as I wanted to benefit from these Ayurvedic oils! Needless to stay I ended up not sticking to my promise to myself, but I still ensure to get massages as much as possible!
