Imagine feeling all the weight of your body dropping away. As you slip into warm water, full of 500kg of Epsom salts, your body becomes weightless.
You are now floating.
There are many reasons why the floating experience has gained popularity all around the world. The long list of health benefits, the fact that it is such an amazing stress reliever, its help for those with chronic pain and also the way you can easily fall into a meditative state just from lying in the water.
A float session really allows you to JUST BE in this crazy fast-paced world.
Ask yourself, when was the last time you did something without having to look at your phone every 2 minutes? That constant stress and pressure of keeping up with our workload, conversations with our friends and family and being sucked into the world of social media is becoming more and more apparent in today’s world.
So imagine 60 or 90mins of complete isolation, away from any distractions in the most comforting environment you could ever imagine.
Floating is extremely beneficial for our nervous system. Because all our senses (which are usually being overloaded), take a break, our body goes into a deep state of rest. The magnesium contained within the Epsom salts, mean all the muscles in your body relax making it fantastic for athletes recovery and also for those suffering from chronic pain. The magnesium is also very helpful for back, joint and muscles pain, and for the optimal function of our immune system.
Here’s what you can expect: You will be in a private room where you can undress, take a quick shower to rinse off any oils on your body and just hop into the tank closing the lid after you. You can choose to be with or without lighting, and with or without music. As soon as you are in the tank, position yourself lying down and you will naturally float from there. The water temperature is matched to skin temperature (35 degrees), helping you lose perception of where your body ends and the water begins. Then all you need to do is let go, relax and let yourself float.
So as you can imagine, the whole point of float therapy is a sensory deprivation experience (more so if you choose to turn off the lights with music playing only for the first 10 minutes of your float to help you relax completely, and playing again for the last 5 minutes to ease you back to your senses) in a very relaxing environment. And the whole experience naturally promotes a meditative state.
Your brain will stop releasing stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. You will then enter a similar state to what happens before you fall asleep. Calm, stable theta waves are produced instead of alpha and beta waves. Your body will stop fighting gravity because it’s floating and this allows you to completely relax.
When in this state of deep relaxation, all of the thoughts and worries that usually occupy our mind fade into the distance. When we feel less and are less stressed by these thoughts, we become more and more comfortable in the present moment. Here small things can make us feel very good. Even our breath and small movements of our body become very enjoyable. Without tension it is much easier for us to connect to ourselves. And from this connection comes a sense of peace and feeling of inner satisfaction.
It is worth pointing out that every float session is different. Sometimes our mind is more active, and we can let it roam around processing its thoughts. Other times we feel deep stillness. The best thing is to empty our expectations and just enjoy the present moment. Enjoy the float.
